DUI Suspect Crashes into Lyft Killing 1, Injuring 3 in San Diego

A DUI suspect hit and Lyft car killing one passenger and injuring 3 others in San Diego.

The collision was just after 2:30 a.m. on the southbound route of SR 163. Both cars went off the highway into a ditch near the shoulder.

The Lyft vehicle was a white Mazda sedan carrying two passengers in the back. The DUI suspect’s vehicle was a Lexus sedan and was carrying no passengers.

Officials said the crash ejected one person from the backseat of the Mazda. The three others in the collision sustained serious injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Lexus was a 21-year-old woman who rear-ended the Lyft. Currently, police suspect she was driving under the influence. She is in a local hospital with serious injuries.

Police confirmed the crash took the life of a 40-year-old man in the backseat of the Lyft. He was in the backseat and wearing his seatbelt. Firefighters had to cut the top of the car to remove the man from the vehicle. Police did not release his name.

Officials said the other man that was ejected from the Lyft suffered serious injuries and was taken to Sripps Memorial Hospital. He is a 33-year-old man from San Leandro, California. He was not wearing his seatbelt during the crash.

The Lyft driver is a 27-year-old man from Sanatee. His injuries were moderate, and he is in UC San Diego Medical Center.

The crash is still under investigation. Also, the freeway was not open after the incident until one lane became open hours after the crash.
