Driver Connected with Crash that Killed Boy Arrested on DUI Charges

A driver was arrested in connection with a DUI crash in San Jose that killed a boy.

According to the San Jose Police Department, Isael Velarde, 18, was taken in on several charges including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Also, felony hit-and-run, driving under the influence causing an injury, and driving without a license.

The crash happened early in the morning on Thursday, June 6. Officers responded to reports of a crash at 3:46 a.m. According to the investigators, an older Toyota Camry heading northbound drifted into the southbound lanes and crashed into a concrete guardrail before spinning out.

One boy and two adults were in the vehicle, driven by Velarde. After spinning out, the vehicle continued driving, heading the wrong way in the southbound lane.

According to police, the boy had been ejected from the vehicle and was left lying in the roadway where he was found. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs are suspected factors in the crash. The identities of both the boy and Velarde’s other passenger have not been released.
